UCLH played host to an in international workshop on the treatment of varicose veins with delegates attending from all over the world.

Dr Joe Brookes, divisional clinical director for Imaging and Vascular Services, co-hosted the European School of Interventional Radiology (ESIR) annual workshop on varicose vein treatments at the UCH Education Centre.

Joe performed the first cases of laser ablation of varicose veins in the UK at the former Middlesex Hospital in March 2001, after training with the technique’s inventor, Robert Min, in New York.

The ESIR is the educational faculty of CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe) and last year’s host Dr Christophe Binkert from Winterthur, near Zurich, Switzerland again shared the podium with Joe and representatives from University Hospital, North Staffordshire, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Delegates from UK, Europe, USA and Saudi Arabia also attended, enjoying a Thames boat trip and circuit on the London Eye on the evening after the conference.

From l to r: Tanja Valentinisch (CIRSE organiser), Dr David West, Joe Brookes DCD for Imaging UCLH, Dr Christophe Binkert, chief of IR Winterthur, Switzerland, Dr Richard Salter (Guy's and St Thomas'), Dr Tarun Sabharwal (IR Guys and local organiser)

Joe said: “The workshop on varicose veins was a great success with delegates from all over the world and a lively international faculty of experts teaching. The format of the workshop was very interactive with small and large group teaching which allowed for plenty of discussion and everyone gets to know their colleagues. Our new Education Centre was the perfect venue for this and I was proud to show it off."

The UCLH endovacular team is co-hosting the London Cardiovascular Symposium in October at the Royal Society of Medicine.
