INSTRUCTION SHEET FOR PATIENTS FOLLOWING
VARICOSE VEIN PROCEDURES
Following recovery you will be discharged wearing a bandage with a compression stocking over the top. Please keep this on for 24 hours.
The following evening when you go to bed take off the stocking and the bandage. You will see some little steri-strip plasters and the beginnings of some bruising.
The next morning put the stocking only back on first thing and wear it during daytime when you are up and about for the next two weeks, taking it off at night to sleep and to bathe.
Bathing
Avoid long hot soaking baths for 3 days. You may shower after 24 hours.
What to expect
Most people have some degree of bruising which may be really impressive but this will resolve and fade over 10 – 14 days. It is usual to have a little soreness along the treated veins which will worsen over the first 5 days and then resolve over the next 10 days. During this time you will still be fully mobile but simple analgesics such as Paracetamol or Nurofen can be taken if the discomfort becomes obtrusive.
Lumps and bumps
It is normal to have some lumpiness associated with the treated veins. In the first 3 weeks, in the context of the treatment this is good, meaning that the veins are blocked and will soften and disappear over time.
Skin marks
Little red marks at needle puncture sites may be visible. These will fade and disappear over the coming weeks.
Please call 020 7616 7795 and arrange a follow up appointment in 3-4 weeks time.
